India’s opponent in the men’s cricket semifinal at the Asian Games 2026 has been confirmed, with Sri Lanka advancing after their quarter-final against Nepal was abandoned because of persistent rain in Nisshin, Japan, on Tuesday.
The washout completed a remarkable sequence in the men’s cricket tournament, with all four quarter-finals abandoned without a result. India had already entered the last four after their own quarter-final against Afghanistan was washed out on Monday.
India to Face Sri Lanka on October 1
India will now meet Sri Lanka in the second semifinal at the Korogi Sports Park on Thursday, October 1. The other last-four contest will see Pakistan face Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka progressed after rain prevented any play in their quarter-final against Nepal. The match was called off before the toss, meaning the higher-ranked team advanced under the tournament regulations.
Sri Lanka entered the Asian Games as one of the four seeded teams and were ranked above Nepal in the ICC T20I rankings. That ranking advantage proved decisive when weather conditions made a cricketing contest impossible.
India Also Advanced Without Playing
India’s route to the semifinal has followed the same unusual pattern. The Shreyas Iyer-led side was scheduled to face Afghanistan in the quarter-final, but relentless rain left the playing conditions unsuitable.
With no ball bowled, India progressed because of their superior seeding. The defending champions are among the tournament’s highest-ranked teams, while Afghanistan entered the knockout stage with a lower ICC T20I ranking.
As a result, India are still waiting to play their first match of the Asian Games men’s cricket competition.
Rain Dominates Asian Games Cricket
Weather has become the defining storyline of the men’s cricket tournament in Nagoya. Pakistan’s quarter-final against Hong Kong was also abandoned, while Bangladesh’s match against Malaysia suffered the same fate.
The repeated washouts have left the semifinal line-up determined by tournament rankings rather than performances on the field. Pakistan will face Bangladesh in the other semifinal after both sides benefited from abandoned quarter-finals.
India’s Gold-Medal Defence Continues
India are attempting to retain the men’s cricket gold medal won at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. The previous final was also affected by rain, with India receiving the gold after Afghanistan’s challenge was washed out.
The 2026 tournament has introduced a different rule for the final: if the gold-medal match is abandoned, the two finalists will share the gold medals rather than the higher-ranked team automatically taking the title.
For now, India’s focus turns to Sri Lanka, with supporters hoping the weather finally allows the defending champions to begin their campaign on the field.
