Chelsea’s difficult start to the Premier League season continued on Saturday as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The result extended Chelsea’s winless run in the Premier League to three matches and left manager Xabi Alonso with plenty to consider after his side produced a disappointing second-half performance.

Chelsea appeared composed during the opening 45 minutes and showed signs of improvement defensively. However, they struggled to create clear-cut opportunities and ultimately collapsed after the break, conceding three goals.

Jaidon Anthony opened the scoring in the 61st minute before Igor Thiago doubled Brentford’s advantage. Fábio Carvalho then completed the scoring in stoppage time to give Keith Andrews’ side a deserved victory.

Chelsea Start Brightly but Lack Cutting Edge

Chelsea had the first major opportunity of the match when Danny Welbeck showed good skill before setting up Pedro Neto. Neto’s resulting effort forced an excellent save from Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher.

Welbeck was making his first Premier League start, but Chelsea noticeably missed the presence of João Pedro, who was unavailable through injury. The attacking combination between Welbeck, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers lacked the fluidity Chelsea have shown when João Pedro has played.

Despite that, Chelsea controlled significant periods of the first half and looked more disciplined than in some of their previous Premier League performances.

Rogers found space inside the Brentford penalty area late in the opening period, but his shot was blocked by Jannik Schuster.

At the other end, Yehor Yarmoliuk produced Brentford’s clearest opportunity of the first half when he burst forward and fired a low shot that was comfortably saved by Emiliano Martínez.

Henderson Makes First Chelsea League Start

Jordan Henderson was handed his first Premier League start for Chelsea, providing experience and leadership in a revamped midfield.

The former Liverpool captain lined up alongside Valentín Barco, who was also making his first league start for Chelsea.

Henderson had not appeared for any club since making a substitute appearance for England against Panama in June. His presence gave Chelsea greater composure in midfield, while Barco also impressed during the opening period.

Chelsea’s defensive structure was another positive in the first half. They competed well physically, won several duels and prevented Brentford from controlling second balls.

However, their inability to turn possession into goals ultimately proved costly.

Brentford Punish Chelsea After the Break

Chelsea’s defensive improvements disappeared shortly after half-time.

In the 61st minute, Mikkel Damsgaard delivered a corner into the Chelsea penalty area. The visitors’ marking was poor, allowing Schuster to rise unchallenged and head the ball back across goal.

Anthony was in the right position to finish from close range, giving Brentford the lead.

The goal changed the momentum of the match and exposed Chelsea’s vulnerability from set pieces.

Igor Thiago Doubles Brentford’s Lead

Brentford soon took advantage of another defensive mistake.

Damsgaard played a simple through-ball that split Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana, allowing Kevin Schade to race through on goal.

Schade’s effort was saved by Martínez, but Chelsea failed to clear the danger. Igor Thiago reacted quickest to the rebound and fired the ball into the net for his first Premier League goal of the season.

The goal put Brentford firmly in control and left Chelsea facing another disappointing result.

Carvalho Adds Third in Stoppage Time

Brentford continued to threaten as Chelsea struggled to respond.

In stoppage time, Schade drove a low cross across the face of goal. Substitute Fábio Carvalho arrived at the right moment and smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

The late strike completed a 3-0 victory for Brentford and sparked celebrations among the home supporters.

Chelsea’s Problems Continue

The defeat will raise further questions for Alonso after Chelsea once again struggled to maintain their level across 90 minutes.

The first-half performance offered some encouragement, particularly in terms of defensive organisation and midfield control. However, the lack of attacking cohesion and the defensive lapses after half-time ultimately decided the contest.

The absence of João Pedro was also noticeable, with Welbeck unable to provide the same link-up play between Palmer and Rogers.

For Brentford, the victory was a statement performance. Andrews’ side remained competitive throughout and took advantage of Chelsea’s mistakes when the opportunities arrived.

Chelsea now face renewed pressure to find consistency as their Premier League winless run reaches three matches.
