India secured their second successive gold medal in the men’s cricket event at the 2026 Asian Games after defeating Pakistan by 19 runs in a high-scoring final.

Batting first, India posted an imposing 211/6 in 20 overs, powered by quick half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma (61) and *Tilak Varma (51)**, while Shivam Dube added a crucial 27.

Pakistan produced a strong response through Hasan Nawaz, who smashed 96 and kept his side in the contest until the final over. However, India held their nerve with the ball to restrict Pakistan to 192/6, sealing the gold medal.

Abhishek Sharma Sets Up India’s Huge Total

India made an explosive start after choosing to bat first, racing to 81 runs during the Powerplay despite a surface that offered assistance to the spinners.

Pakistan’s decision to introduce leg-spinner Saad Masood in the second over backfired. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hit him for two sixes before Abhishek Sharma took the attack apart, turning the over into a 24-run haul.

India reached 50 in just 3.2 overs, although Sooryavanshi and Sanju Samson departed early. Abhishek continued his assault and brought up a remarkable 20-ball fifty.

His innings eventually ended for 61 when Arafat Minhas had him stumped, but India remained in a strong position.

Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube Finish Strongly

Pakistan’s spinners managed to slow India’s scoring rate in the middle overs. Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan struggled to find boundaries, and India went through a 34-ball period without one.

Tilak Varma finally broke the drought in the 17th over before Shivam Dube joined the attack.

The pair accelerated dramatically in the closing overs. Dube struck successive sixes against Saim Ayub, while Tilak punished Sufyan Moqim and Ahmed Daniyal.

Tilak reached his fifty from 21 balls, remaining unbeaten on 51. Dube contributed 27 before falling early in the final over as India crossed the 200-run mark.

India finished on 211/6, setting Pakistan a challenging target.

Hasan Nawaz Keeps Pakistan Alive

Pakistan’s chase got off to a difficult start as Axar Patel and Washington Sundar struck during the Powerplay.

Pakistan were reduced to 39/2, with India’s bowlers managing to keep the required run rate under pressure.

Hasan Nawaz then changed the momentum of the innings. Alongside Saim Ayub, he put together an 87-run partnership that brought Pakistan back into contention.

Nawaz survived a couple of chances, including a dropped catch following a collision between Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ravi Bishnoi. He made India pay for the reprieve, attacking the spinners and bringing up his half-century.

Bishnoi came under particular pressure, conceding 44 runs from his three overs.

India Hold Their Nerve at the Death

Pakistan needed 68 runs from the final four overs, with Nawaz still at the crease.

India continued to make occasional errors in the field, but Washington Sundar delivered a crucial 18th over. He dismissed Abdul Samad and conceded only eight runs, including a six from the final delivery.

Jasprit Bumrah then bowled the penultimate over, conceding a six but largely executing his yorkers effectively.

Pakistan entered the final over needing 33 runs. Dube conceded a boundary and a wide initially, but recovered with a yorker that effectively ended Pakistan’s hopes.

Nawaz was eventually dismissed from the final ball after an outstanding innings of 96, leaving Pakistan on 192/6 after 20 overs.

India Win Gold by 19 Runs

India’s all-round performance earned them a 19-run victory and their second consecutive men’s cricket gold medal at the Asian Games.

Abhishek Sharma’s explosive start, Tilak Varma’s unbeaten fifty and the late acceleration from Shivam Dube gave India the platform. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar then provided important breakthroughs before India’s death bowling closed out the contest.
